RIKILT employs a wide range of molecular-biological techniques for risk assessment and the screening of organic substances, chemical contaminants, veterinary drugs in food, and different types of animal feed. These techniques are also used to develop methods for analysing the safety of new foodstuffs (including those originating from genetically modified organisms) and detecting genetically modified organisms and food pathogens.

RIKILT is actively involved in the latest developments in molecular biology. This includes genomics technologies, where DNA micro-arrays, NMR, LC-MS and GC-MS, among other things, are used to solve issues in the field of toxicology (toxicogenomics) and food sciences (nutrigenomics).
