This field of expertise concentrates on research into the safety and effects of (agricultural) additives, (environmental) contaminants and banned growth promoters present in the food chain. The potentially toxic effects of new foodstuffs – including genetically modified organisms – are also studied.
In the framework of this research, RIKILT develops bioassays for screening potentially toxic substances, including natural toxins in food production chains and substances with specific biological activities, such as growth promoters.
